HSV earns 2:0 against Magdeburg
Hamburger SV has maintained its home credentials in the 2nd Bundesliga and is now the first runner-up to city rivals and league leaders FC St. Pauli. Thanks to a hard-earned 2-0 (1-0) win against 1. FC Magdeburg, who were equal for a long time, HSV overtook Fortuna Düsseldorf in the standings and are back in second place. For coach Tim Walter's team, it was their sixth win in six matches this season at home in Volkspark.
Laszlo Benes (9') gave the hosts an early lead in front of 56,800 spectators. Bakery Jatta (72) headed home the final goal. In the 78th minute, Daniel Elfadli of all people was shown the red card after a rough foul. The Hamburg club had long sought to acquire the Magdeburg defensive man in the summer.
The visitors, now without a win in seven games, had the first dangerous goalmouth scramble after just a few seconds. After that, however, Hamburg dominated proceedings. In the eighth minute, top scorer Robert Glatzel narrowly missed. One minute later, Benes completed an outstanding combination to score his seventh goal of the season.
However, Magdeburg were not deterred by the early deficit. The lively Baris Atik and Jason Ceka in particular kept the HSV defense busy time and again. However, the Hamburg defense stood firm for the most part.
A short break in the first half was caused by fans in the Magdeburg crowd, who set off several rockets. Referee Florian Exner interrupted the game in the 25th minute. However, play resumed two minutes later.
The game remained evenly poised for a long time in the second half. The visiting team of ex-HSV coach Christian Titz did not let up and initially got into promising positions time and again. Hamburg were struggling. Coach Walter reacted and brought on Lukasz Poreba and Jean-Luc Dompé. They revitalized their team's play. It was Dompe who provided the cross for Jatta's header. The visitors' resistance was broken when Elfadli was shown a red card.
Hamburger SV's strong performance in Bundesliga 2 has positioned them as the primary challenger to city rivals FC St. Pauli, with their 2-0 victory against 1st FC Magdeburg moving them up to second place. Despite Laszlo Benes' early goal and Bakery Jatta's second-half header, Hamburg had to deal with a resilient Magdeburg, who had previously gone seven games without a win.
