EU Qualifiers for the Football Championship - Hrubesch remains hopeful despite Hegering's injury.
Horst Hrubesch maintained a cautious optimism after defender Marina Hegering was forced to leave the pitch in the European Championship qualifier against Poland. The German women's national team's coach expressed concern about her injury, which had already been pre-existing. "She had an injury on her shin. She fell awkwardly. She felt something there," said the 73-year-old Hrubesch on Friday evening after the 4-1 win over the Poles in Rostock. "It was going well for her again." They'll need to determine if it's anything more severe now, added Hrubesch. Hegering, a key player from Wolfsburg, is expected to undergo an MRT scan on Saturday.
Hegering is a crucial player for the DFB squad, especially with the Olympics in mind next summer in France. This was evident in the first half against Poland - when they were without her on the field. The German team found themselves a goal down in just 28 seconds, and their defense looked shaky in the following minutes.
When Hegering returned to the game in the second half, the defense stabilized. This gave rise to the hosts' renewed pressure on the Polish team. "I think you could feel her presence when she was on the field, she brings such security with her," stated teammate Giulia Gwinn. "I hope it's not too bad. She's very experienced and hope she'll be with us soon." Gwinn even scored a double pack while her Munich teammate, Schüller, also found the net to secure a clear victory, pushing their chances of qualifying for the 2025 European Championship even higher. With Hegering absent, they were still able to achieve success.
