Hrubesch on Rostock return: With a smile on his face

Against Denmark, the DFB team has nothing less at stake than the question: Is the Olympics still within reach? A clear victory is needed in Rostock. For coach Hrubesch, it is also a homecoming.

National team - Hrubesch on Rostock return: With a smile on his face

The interim coach of the German women's soccer team and former coach of FC Hansa, Horst Hrubesch, was happy to return to Rostock. "I went here with a smile on my face, I have to say, and actually have a lot of good memories," he said on Thursday ahead of the important Nations League match against Denmark, which takes place on Friday at the Ostseestadion (8.30pm/ZDF).

Hrubesch was coach of the then second division club Hansa Rostock from the beginning of January 1993 until the end of June 1993. With 19 games and a record of eight defeats, four draws and seven wins, his tenure on the coast was short-lived.

Nevertheless, Hrubesch was very positive before the international match: "The connection has never really been broken over the years." He still has a few acquaintances and has occasionally been to Rostock to go fishing. He is also pleased that Hansa Rostock are back in the Bundesliga 2. "Maybe we'll go back to the first division - in that direction," said the 72-year-old.

According to the DFB, 18,350 tickets had been sold by Thursday for the Nations League match of the German women's soccer team in the Ostseestadion. In order to have a realistic chance of winning the group and thus an Olympic ticket, the German national team (9 points) must win the home game against leaders Denmark (12) by at least two goals difference.

The last preliminary round match is scheduled for December 5 in Wales. Only by finishing first in their group would the German women's soccer team play in the final four-team Nations League tournament at the end of February for one of the two European Olympic places for Paris 2024. France are seeded as hosts.
