The night after the cellar fire in the Berlin district of Hellersdorf, the six-storey residential building initially remained uninhabitable. According to a fire department spokesperson, supply lines were also damaged in the fire. In the early hours of Sunday morning, firefighters again extinguished pockets of embers in the cellar. After clearing up and a final check on Sunday morning, the operation was ended. The police now suspect arson.

According to the police, around 35 residents of the apartment building in Tangermünder Straße had to leave their apartments on Saturday and were temporarily accommodated with friends and relatives. In addition, the district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, together with the property management, had taken care of further accommodation. The police and fire department were unable to say when the apartment building could be occupied again.

Fire in several cellar closets

There was a fire in the basement of the apartment building on Saturday morning. The fire department was on site and extinguished the flames. When the criminal investigation department began its investigation in the afternoon after the extinguishing work, the emergency services noticed smoke and the smell of burning again, according to the police - the fire department moved in again. According to the police, the fire had flared up again. Around 35 cellar cupboards were damaged or completely destroyed in the fire.

Extensive extinguishing work

Around 140 firefighters were deployed, according to the fire department. All residents were asked to leave their homes due to the considerable smoke development. As the police reported, several apartment doors were forced open to ensure that there were no more people in the house. No one was injured. According to the fire department, a bus was initially sent to the scene of the fire to provide temporary accommodation.

According to the police, Tangermünder Straße was closed between Quedlinburger Straße and Zerbster Straße until late Saturday evening while the fire was being extinguished. The criminal investigation department is investigating serious arson.
