Hostage-takers at Hamburg Airport still armed
According to the police, the hostage-taker at Hamburg airport is still armed. "We currently have to assume that he is in possession of a live firearm and possibly also explosive devices of an unknown type," the police wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday afternoon. The top priority was to protect the man's four-year-old daughter, who was in the car.
"According to our current knowledge, the child is physically well," the police wrote. The negotiating team is still in contact with the 35-year-old. There is no demand for money from the man, police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün told dpa at the airport.
The man had broken through a gate with a car at around 8 p.m. on Saturday evening and driven onto the apron of the airport. According to the police, he shot into the air and threw "some kind of Molotov cocktail" from the car. According to the police, this was probably preceded by a custody dispute with the mother. The airport is still largely closed and flight operations have been suspended since Saturday evening.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, the police continue to treat the situation at Hamburg Airport seriously, as the hostage-taker is still believed to have air traffic-disrupting weapons, such as a live firearm and potentially explosive devices. Regrettably, incidents of crime extend beyond this situation, with reports of increased petty thefts and loitering around the closed airport perimeter.
