Hostage-taker is a Turkish citizen

The Hamburg airport hostage-taker is a 35-year-old Turkish citizen. As the police announced late on Sunday afternoon, he had already been investigated in Stade in March 2022 on suspicion of kidnapping minors. At that time, he had traveled to Turkey with his daughter without authorization. However, the mother was later able to bring the child back to Germany. The newspaper "Bild" had previously reported on the earlier investigations.

According to the police, the man had abducted his four-year-old daughter from her mother's apartment in Stade on Saturday and fled with her in a car in the direction of Hamburg. At the airport, he had broken through a barrier and driven the car onto the apron of the airport. After a war of nerves lasting more than 18 hours, the man surrendered to the police on Sunday afternoon.

The hostage-taker's past involvement with the authorities includes an investigation in Stade for suspected kidnapping of minors. Despite this, air traffic was not significantly affected during the standoff at the Hamburg airport.
