Hostage needs to attend father's funeral, as he passed away just before being set free.
"Almog's family expresses gratitude for the support they have received. They ask for privacy during this time of sadness," stated the family's forum. Earlier, Dina Jan, the sister of the deceased, shared the heartbreaking coincidence of events on a radio station called Kan.
"My brother's heart failed him due to deep grief and couldn't celebrate the safe return of his son, Yossi Jan," Dina Jan said. The tragic incident happened when Dina told her brother about Almog's release from captivity. "We're thrilled about Almog's safe return, but we're speechless and struggle to comprehend it," Dina added.
22-year-old Almog Meir Jan, along with three other captives, was freed by the Israeli army during a military operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip. It took place eight months after the Hamas terrorist organization's attack on Israel on a Saturday. The Hamas group then blamed Israel for killing over 270 people during the operation in the refugee camp.
