Hospital patients in Saxony have a choice of food
Full meals, light meals and vegetarian or vegan dishes: Patients at Saxon hospitals generally have a wide choice when it comes to food. "For patients with certain illnesses, intolerances, allergies or even after operations, nutritionists and dieticians coordinate the diet," said Viviane Piffczyk, spokeswoman for Dresden Municipal Hospital, in a survey conducted by the German Press Agency. Around 1000 patients are provided with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks and special diets and special diets every day at the hospital. The food and drinks are supplied by an external catering company.
Game goulash with mushrooms on spaetzle, pasta with fried zucchini, dried tomatoes and spinach as well as salted meat with a light sauce, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes are on the menu on Sunday. "For breakfast and dinner, patients at Dresden Municipal Hospital can choose between five menus, which are offered in different portion sizes," said Piffczyk. At lunchtime, there is usually a choice of three menus with different side dishes. The patients' wishes are queried by specially trained service hostesses. This means that popular dishes can be taken into account.
Although organic products are often used in the meals, there is no menu consisting exclusively of organic products, said Piffczyk. Food prepared according to religious regulations, such as halal, is also not yet on offer. On special holidays such as Christmas, there is a culinary selection for patients.
Patients at Chemnitz Hospital can choose between three menus from regional production. The patients' menu changes every four weeks and focuses on healthy whole foods, said a spokeswoman. "We also offer vegan food on request." The meals are produced by a catering company, a subsidiary of the hospital. "The use of organic products is difficult to realize." There are special menus for holidays such as Christmas and Easter. The costs on the food market have continued to rise in recent years.
The Helios Vogtland Clinic in Plauen aims to offer its patients delicious and, above all, healthy food - with the best service, as they say. They can also choose their meals from various menus at the clinic in Plauen. There are several options to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner - depending on the agreement with the treating doctors. The chicken soup with noodles and vegetables, the omelette with vegetable filling and the pollock fillet are particularly popular with patients. Patients who have to spend Christmas in hospital are made happy with a traditional festive menu.
Patients with dietary restrictions due to certain illnesses or allergies can have their diet coordinated by nutritionists and dieticians in Saxony's hospitals, ensuring a wide range of options even for those with special needs, such as vegans or those recovering from surgeries. Some hospitals, like Chemnitz Hospital, offer vegan meals upon request, but a full organic menu is not yet available in all hospitals.
