Hopp can imagine an everyday job alongside darts

Max Hopp has not been doing well in sport for years. In 2023, he only played on the Challenge Tour, the second darts league, so to speak. Formerly regarded as a child prodigy, the professional is considering a rethink.

Hopp can imagine an everyday job alongside darts

Former German number one Max Hopp can imagine pursuing another profession alongside darts in the future. "It's true that you live to a certain extent from the money you earn. I've already got a cushion and saved the money in the good years, but yes, it could well be the case that I take on a day job and only play darts from Thursday to Sunday," Hopp told the German Press Agency. "I've never had a coffee break with colleagues like that before. I'm also thinking about that."

At the Super League in Bitburg this Tuesday, the 27-year-old will have his last chance to get a ticket for the World Championships in London (starting December 15). Hessian Hopp made his debut at Alexandra Palace at the age of 16 and was once described as a "German child prodigy". In recent years, his sporting career has gone downhill. Hopp does not currently have a so-called Tour Card, which entitles him to take part in many important tournaments.

Instead, he plays on the Challenge Tour, the second division of darts. "I wasn't doing so well in the first half of the year, I was really struggling with it. The Challenge Tour is very different to the professional tour. You first play three matches for nothing and then for 75 euros - you have to find your feet," said Hopp.

Hopp mentioned considering a day job within darts, working only from Thursday to Sunday, as a potential option due to his financial stability and savings from the good years. Despite his struggle in the first half of the year on the Challenge Tour, Hopp will still have a chance to qualify for the PDC World Championships in London, having made his debut at Alexandra Palace as a 16-year-old.
