- Homelessness death investigation not yet completed
Four months after the death of a homeless man in the Allgäu following an attack by a teenager, the investigation is nearing completion. Officials hope to have all necessary documents by early September, a spokesperson for the Kempten public prosecutor's office told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Then, a decision will be made on whether and, if so, on what charges to indict the 17-year-old suspect. The criminal police have already submitted their final report to the public prosecutor's office.
Police: Attack appears to have been unprovoked
The 17-year-old has been in custody since his arrest in May, suspected of manslaughter. He is alleged to have attacked the 53-year-old homeless man in Immenstadt (district of Oberallgäu) seemingly without provocation.
Initially, police reported that the man had sustained "apparently superficial injuries" to the head and had declined medical treatment. Later, the 53-year-old retreated to the vestibule of a bank branch to spend the night there. He was found there in critical condition the next morning and later died from the consequences of a brain hemorrhage.
Brain hemorrhage a result of the blows?
It is still unclear whether the brain hemorrhage was a direct result of the nighttime attack. The Kempten public prosecutor's office is awaiting the results of a legal medical examination, the spokesperson said. Additionally, the results of a DNA test and a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect are still pending. The teenager had been temporarily accommodated in a therapeutic facility and was receiving youth psychiatric treatment.
The 17-year-old was already known to police as a repeat offender prior to the attack. He had been previously investigated for burglary, theft, insult, threat, and bodily harm, a spokesperson for the Kempten public prosecutor's office said shortly after the arrest. The teenager is said to have previously threatened officers with a knife.
The 17-year-old suspect is currently in custody in Germany, following his arrest for suspected manslaughter. The homeless man, who sustained fatal injuries during the attack, was originally from Germany as well.
