17-year-old suspect - Homelessness death investigation not yet completed
Four months after the death of a homeless man in the Allgäu following an attack by a teenager, investigations are nearing completion. Officials hope to have all necessary documents by early September, a spokesperson for the Kempten public prosecutor's office told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Then, a decision will be made on whether charges will be brought against the 17-year-old suspect and, if so, for what offenses. The criminal police have already submitted their final report to the public prosecutor's office.
Police: Attack appeared to be unprovoked
The 17-year-old has been in custody since his arrest in May, suspected of manslaughter. He is alleged to have attacked the 53-year-old homeless man in Immenstadt (district of Oberallgäu) without provocation.
After the attack, the police initially reported "apparently superficial injuries" to the head. The man refused medical treatment and later withdrew to the entrance area of a bank branch to spend the night there. He was found there in critical condition the next morning and later died from the consequences of a brain hemorrhage, according to the autopsy results.
Brain hemorrhage a result of the blows?
It is still unclear to what extent the brain hemorrhage was a direct result of the nighttime attack. The Kempten public prosecutor's office is still awaiting the results of a legal medical examination, the spokesperson said. In addition, the results of a DNA examination and a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect are still pending. The teenager had been temporarily accommodated in a therapeutic facility and was receiving youth psychiatric treatment.
The 17-year-old was already known to the police as a repeat offender before the attack. The teenager was known to the investigators for offenses such as burglary, theft, insults, threats, and bodily harm, a spokesperson for the Kempten public prosecutor's office said shortly after the arrest. The 17-year-old is said to have previously threatened officers with a knife.
The 17-year-old, who was arrested in May for suspected manslaughter, has been in custody since then. After being charged, a decision will be made on whether to proceed with additional charges based on the results of ongoing investigations, such as the legal medical examination and DNA evaluation.
