- Home uninhabitable after basement fire - 50 people affected
A fire in a basement compartment has temporarily made a multi-family house in Ulm uninhabitable. The cause of this is residues of smoke throughout the entire staircase, a police spokesperson said. 50 residents were affected, who took refuge with acquaintances or in an emergency shelter. It is not yet possible to estimate when the house can be inhabited again.
Residents noticed on Monday evening that strong smoke was coming from a basement compartment and called the fire department. Most of the residents of the house were able to evacuate in time, according to the police. One resident had to be rescued from their apartment using a turntable ladder. Three people were treated on the spot by rescue services for minor injuries, having inhaled smoke.
What exactly was burning in the basement compartment was initially unclear to the police spokesperson. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The police cannot rule out the possibility of arson at this stage. The estimated damage is 50,000 euros.
The affected residents are currently seeking shelter in Ulm or elsewhere, as their home in Ulm remains uninhabitable. The local fire department was called to handle the smoke incident in a basement compartment situated in Ulm.
