- Home uninhabitable after basement fire - 50 people affected
A fire in a basement compartment has temporarily made a multi-family house in Ulm uninhabitable. The reason for this is residual smoke throughout the entire stairwell, according to a police spokesperson. A total of 50 residents were affected, who found accommodation with acquaintances or in an emergency shelter. It is not yet possible to estimate when the house will be habitable again.
Residents noticed on Monday evening that strong smoke was coming from a basement compartment and called the fire department. Most residents of the house were able to evacuate in time, according to the police. One resident had to be rescued from their apartment using a turntable ladder. Three people were treated on-site by emergency services for minor injuries from smoke inhalation.
The exact cause of the fire in the basement compartment is still unclear, as is the cause of the fire itself, according to the police spokesperson. Therefore, arson cannot be ruled out at this time. The estimated damage is 50,000 euros.
The fire in the basement compartment spread a smell of smoke into several apartments, making them unsuitable for inhabitation. Despite the efforts to extinguish the fire, embers continued to smolder, contributing to the persistent smell of smoke.
