Bundesliga - Home match for St. Pauli, top opponent for VfL Wolfsburg
Second-league champions FC St. Pauli face the 1. FC Heidenheim in the first matchday of the Bundesliga, while VfL Wolfsburg host Bayern Munich. The German Football League (DFL) announced this. The games take place on the 24th or 25th of August at the Millerntor. The exact schedules are not set yet. Here's an overview of the Northern Bundesliga teams:
FC St. Pauli
After the match against Heidenheim, St. Pauli's new trainer Alexander Blessin and his team travel to 1. FC Union Berlin for the second matchday (30th August to 1st September). "Starting the Bundesliga with a game at Millerntor is overwhelming. I can hardly wait for it to begin. We go into this challenge with respect, but we know what our team is capable of," Blessin said.
Holstein Kiel
Holstein Kiel's first Bundesliga game in the club's history is against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Trainer Marcel Rapp spent eight years as a youth coach in the Kraichgau. The Storks celebrate their Bundesliga premiere against VfL Wolfsburg on the second matchday. After that, Bayern Munich come to Kiel (13th to 15th September). Sport business manager Carsten Wehlmann said: "We'll know then that we've made it to the Bundesliga." The derby against fellow promoter FC St. Pauli is on matchday 12 (29th November to 1st December) in Hamburg.
Werder Bremen
Trainer Ole Werner and Werder Bremen travel to FC Augsburg for the season opener. In their first two home games, Borussia Dortmund (30th August to 1st September) and record champions Munich (20th to 22nd September) visit Weserstadion. "It's an exciting start for us. The two top teams in our first two home games are obviously major challenges, but we're looking forward to the tasks," football business manager Clemens Fritz said.
VfL Wolfsburg
The "Wolves" face Bayern Munich, the record champions, in their first matchday game. For trainer Ralph Hasenhuettl and his team, the home game against the Bayern is a true litmus test. After the away game in Kiel, Wolfsburg then host Eintracht Frankfurt in their home arena.
