Extremism - Home fire - suspected right-wing extremist arrested

After a fire in a refugee home in Swabia, the criminal police in Memmingen have arrested a suspected right-wing extremist as a suspect. "The Memmingen Criminal Police, at the current stage of investigations, are assuming a xenophobic motive," the officers shared. In the apartment of the 40-year-old, devotional items were found, some of which indicated a right-wing attitude, including several Swastika symbols.

The residents of the communal accommodation in Krumbach (District of Günzburg) detected a smoke smell late in the evening on June 23 and called the fire department. In a storage room in the basement, fire department personnel discovered fire traces, but the flames had already gone out. The police assume that the fire was deliberately set, but no one was injured.

The suspect was arrested on this Monday. A warrant for his arrest was issued against the man due to the suspicion of attempted serious arson. He remains silent about the accusations according to the police.

The investigators now hope for witness statements. In addition, efforts are being made to determine if there is a connection to a fire that was set in another refugee home in Krumbach in October 2022. At that time, three men were lightly injured by the fire. The public prosecutor had initiated investigations for attempted murder, but the case remains unsolved to this day.

The arrest of the right-wing extremist in Memmingen has raised concerns in Bavaria, as this is not the first incident of extremism in the Swabia region. The suspect has a history of living in Swabia, specifically in Krumbach, known for its proximity to Memmingen. The arrested individual is accused of setting a fire in a refugee home, an act that the police are treating as a potential hate crime. The CID is actively investigating any links between this incident and a previous arson attempt in a Krumbach refugee home in October 2022, which resulted in minor injuries to three individuals.
