DFB Cup - Homburg's cup dream comes to an end: 1:4 against St. Pauli
FC St. Pauli have halted FC 08 Homburg's run of success in the DFB Cup and reached the quarter-finals with a win. The second division leaders won their clash with the top team in the Regionalliga West 4:1 (1:1) on Tuesday evening to advance to the last eight.
In front of 12,232 spectators at Homburg's Waldstadion, Hauke Wahl (24th minute), substitute Elias Saad (64th), Marcel Hartel (69th) and Johannes Eggestein (73rd) scored for St. Pauli, who remain unbeaten in 18 competitive domestic matches this season. Markus Mendler had equalized for Homburg in the meantime (28').
In keeping with the course of the game, a set-piece situation led to the superior visitors taking the lead. Wahl had lurked at the second post after a corner and fired in a low shot. Homburg's reply came just four minutes later. The quick equalizer came courtesy of a mistake in the area and St. Pauli goalkeeper Sascha Burchert, who was unable to control a pass from Karol Mets. Mendler intervened quickly and scored to make it 1:1. The equalizer initially seemed like an encouragement. The game became more open as underdog Homburg acted a little more courageously and looked for their chances going forward.
However, the goals were scored by the visitors, who secured victory and progression within nine minutes after the break. St. Pauli are back in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time since the 2021/22 season and can dream of reaching the semi-finals. The last time Hamburg made it to the last four was in 2006, when they were beaten by FC Bayern Munich.
