- Hoeneß: 'There has been too little work'
Uli Hoeneß (72) expects a strong response from the dethroned German champions, FC Bayern Munich, in the upcoming season. "Our players who didn't become champions are all quite upset and want to prove that it was just a slip-up," said the Munich honorary president at a sponsorship event for the Bayern women's football team with the Molkerei Ehrmann in Rottach-Egern.
"I have a feeling that our people are doing good work. I'm quite sure that we'll have a team that can become German champions," Hoeneß emphasized. "Leverkusen will also have a very strong team. But FC Bayern has already well-equipped." In Hoeneß's view, the champion is always the favorite. Leverkusen was even unbeaten in becoming champions for the first time. However, Hoeneß expects "a different tune" to be played this season.
"I think too little work has been done"
The Bayern patron reported that he had also met the new Munich coach, Vincent Kompany. "Work is being done, and that's something we've been lacking," said Hoeneß, satisfied, and clarified on request: "I think too little work has been done."
Last season, FC Bayern was still coached by Thomas Tuchel. The Munich team missed out on the championship for the first time in twelve years. "I'm very, very confident that we'll be at the top again next year," said Hoeneß.
FC Bayern will face a tough test on Saturday (6:30 PM) in London against Tottenham Hotspur. The team of coach Kompany will then start their competitive season on August 16 in the DFB-Pokal against second division newcomers SSV Ulm.
Vincent Kompany, the new Munich coach, is working diligently to improve the team. Hoeneß noted with satisfaction that more work is being done under Kompany's leadership.
Despite the tough competition, FC Bayern, now under Kompany's guidance, will start their competitive season on August 16 against SSV Ulm in the DFB-Pokal.
