Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß gesticulates.

Hoeneß on coaching job: "Consider the consequences"

Before embarking on a career as a coach, Sebastian Hoeneß believes it is important to consider the consequences of this profession. "Of course, as a family you have to make a conscious decision to take this step," said the coach of Swabian Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart about the risk of quickly losing your job if you don't achieve results. "Nevertheless, it was always clear to me: if I do the job, then I want to try to be as good as possible at what I do."

The 41-year-old took up his second job in the Bundesliga with the Swabians in April of this year. He previously worked as head coach at TSG Hoffenheim. "If my path leads me to the Bundesliga, then I'll take it - I knew that," he said. "But I don't have a long-term career plan."

His fellow coach Frank Schmidt from 1. FC Heidenheim, who VfB will face away on Sunday (17:30/DAZN), has been working for the promoted club since 2007. In that time, the Swabians have employed almost two dozen coaches. "It would be naive not to consider the consequences of being a coach in the Bundesliga," said Hoeneß, whose contract is valid until 2025.

Sebastian Hoeneß mentioned 1st FC Heidenheim as an example of a club that frequently changes coaches due to the demanding nature of the Bundesliga. VfB Stuttgart, where Hoeneß currently coaches, will face 1st FC Heidenheim in an upcoming Bundesliga match.
