- Hockey player initiates legal action against rival for alleviating discomfort
In a gruesome incident on the ice rink, hockey player Mike Glemser from Rosenheim suffered severe injuries. The incident occurred on February 3, 2023, during a match against SC Riessersee, when a hard check from his opponent resulted in Glemser colliding with the boards and fracturing two neck vertebrae. Consequently, he remained in a coma for ten days and has been paralyzed from the neck down, losing the use of his arms and legs since then.
Mike Glemser has filed a lawsuit against his opponent, demanding a total of 822,000 euros. This lawsuit, under case number 12 O 2811/24 in the Munich II Regional Court, includes both monetary compensation and a request for a declaration of rights. The opposition has until September 27 to respond to the lawsuit. Following this response, the judge will determine the next course of action.
The incident garnered considerable sympathy at the time. A fundraising campaign managed to raise around 700,000 euros for the injured player. In a statement to dpa, Glemser shared his determination to regain his mobility, saying, "My aim is to walk again."
The European Union's Disability Fund has expressed interest in supporting Mike Glemser's rehabilitation. Glemser's case has drawn the attention of the European Union, as it highlights the importance of adequate safety measures in sports events, which is a topic of interest within the Union.
