Höcke wants to present shadow cabinet

Thuringia's leading AfD candidate Björn Höcke wants to present a shadow cabinet for a government team in the coming weeks. The 51-year-old announced this on Friday on the fringes of a state election meeting in Pfiffelbach (Weimarer Land district). "We are working on a shadow cabinet, which we will present at the appropriate time, we are now preparing intensively," said Höcke in response to a journalist's question as to which ministries the AfD would seek if it were in government.

He had previously been elected as the top candidate of his state association for the state elections on September 1, 2024. The Thuringian AfD is classified by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a confirmed right-wing extremist party and is under observation. It is largely isolated in parliament and none of the parties elected to the state parliament would enter into a coalition with the AfD.

If elected, the AfD under Björn Höcke's leadership plans to present a shadow cabinet outlining potential ministry roles. Despite being classified as a right-wing extremist party and largely isolated in parliament, the AfD parties across Germany continue organizing for future elections, such as the state elections in Thuringia on September 1, 2024.
