History - Historical refurbishment: roads receive additional signs

Three streets with controversial names in Bad Dürkheim will receive additional signs with the historical background. This was recently decided by the city council of the Palatinate municipality, the administration announced on Tuesday.

The committee had previously voted clearly in favor of renaming Karl-Räder-Allee, Philipp-Fauth-Straße and Maler-Ernst-Straße. The three men were found to have anti-democratic, National Socialist and anti-Semitic ideas, according to scientific reports and extensive research carried out by the municipality. However, a citizens' initiative had achieved a referendum with more than 1500 signatures. This resulted in a majority in favor of retaining the street names.

Additional signs with short descriptions of the lives and attitudes of the three men will now be installed, it was said. A QR code will also be displayed next to them, which refers to the short biographies. "This will preserve the street names and at the same time remind us how important and difficult it is to come to terms with the National Socialist era," said Mayor Christoph Glogger (SPD). "May the street names encourage us to stand up for democracy, tolerance and peace."

According to the city, the cost of the signage amounts to 2,000 euros. The signs will be installed in the first quarter of 2024.
