Fire in the downtown area - Historic house in Verden near the cathedral is on fire

In a historic building near the cathedral in the heart of Verden, a fire has broken out. The building, which was built in 1670 according to an inscription, housed a tavern and residential spaces, a police spokesperson said. Three people were injured, the severity of their injuries was initially unclear. The fire spread, the roof collapsed, and the flames spread to the roof of the neighboring house.

By the afternoon, the fire department had largely contained the blaze, but the operation continued as not all hotspots could be extinguished, a spokesperson confirmed. Some residents were being cared for. No cause had been determined yet.

The police asked people to avoid the area around Anita-Augspurg-Platz in Verden and keep routes clear for emergency services. "Please keep windows and doors closed in the inner city of Verden," the police wrote on X. "Please also avoid the entire inner city of Verden," it added.
