Architecture - Historic church reopens at Christmas
Six months after the ceiling collapsed in the historic church in Grüneberg in the district of Oberhavel, a service will be held there again for Christmas. The renovation work has been completed in good time so that the pews and a Christmas tree can be set up shortly before the festivities, as the church district of Oberes Havelland announced on Thursday. Regional Bishop Christian Stäblein will keep his promise and preach in the renovated village church on Christmas Eve. However, the restoration of the building will continue in 2024.
In June, a large part of the Protestant church lay under a mountain of rubble after the ceiling collapsed. Fallen boards and rubble buried the altar and pews. The congregation was very lucky because no church service was being held at the time.
An expert had cited material fatigue in connection with extreme weather conditions such as heat and heavy rain as one cause. According to the church, the extent of the damage is estimated at around 40,000 euros. The parish is still dependent on donations.
The scaffolding inside the church should be removed by Christmas. The new ceiling panels are already securely bolted in place, it said. Work will continue next year, however, when the baroque pulpit altar, which has been damaged, is to be repaired.
The early Gothic church in Grüneberg, a district of the Löwenberger Land municipality, dates back to the second half of the 13th century and is said to be one of the oldest buildings in the village.
Because of the ceiling collapse in Grüneberg, three other churches with similar ceiling constructions were also examined. A church in Barsdorf (Fürstenberg/Havel) with a similar construction was subsequently repaired.
