- Highway 27 Undergoes Temporary Closure for Protesting Activities
For an environmental protest, the authorities temporarily shut down section of the A27 highway between Bremer Kreuz and Achim Nord due points. Agitators descended from a bridge over the A27 at midday, hanging several signs as per a police spokesperson's statement. The spokesperson mentioned that six individuals were on the bridge.
As per the Stade Administrative Court's ruling, the town of Achim was obligated to block the roadway. This was communicated by a court spokesman. Nevertheless, the city managed to reduce the duration of the protest to half an hour at the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court.
Initially, the activists aimed to abseil while the motorway was operational. However, due to safety concerns, the city of Achim banned this practice. The demonstrators were permitted to conduct their protest on the bridge instead. The city's decision was challenged by the activists, resulting in the court ordering the motorway closure for the action. The affected area spans roughly five kilometers near Bremer Kreuz, according to the police.
The protesters argued that their current objective was linked to a legal proceeding stemming from an event in 2021 on the A27 during the transportation ministers' conference. A ruling is anticipated by the Achim Local Court. "On the following court date, we aim to demonstrate that such actions are needed and justified," stated an attendee during the gathering, as per a report.
"The environmentally destructive and deadly motor vehicle traffic injures and endangers numerous people and animals daily," the statement declared. "Less vehicles mean reduced noise pollutants, fresher air, and more space for people. We're fighting for a world where life holds more value than development, speed, and profit through these actions."
Despite the temporary closure of the A27 highway due to the protest, traffic was rerouted onto alternative routes, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters. The environmental activists, using the bridge as their platform, raised banners highlighting their concerns about the harmful effects of highway traffic on the environment and wildlife.
