Flood - Highs on the Rhine soon to be reached
After rain and thaw, the water levels on the rivers of Rhineland-Palatinate will reach their highest levels by Saturday at the latest. This was announced by the Flood Forecasting Center of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment on Thursday. Along the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, this could lead to flooded river banks and increased currents. Shipping traffic is still restricted.
At the Maxau gauge near Karlsruhe, the maximum level of 8.40 meters was probably reached on Thursday morning. This means that the water level is at the level of a flood that statistically occurs every five years. In Mainz, the reported height of 5.5 meters was reportedly exceeded on Thursday. The highest level in the area of a biennial flood will probably be reached on Saturday.
According to the flood forecasting center, the water levels on the Middle Rhine will continue to rise due to the flood wave from the Upper Rhine and the increased inflow from the Moselle. A peak of around six meters is expected at the Kaub gauge and in Koblenz on Saturday. This would be in the range of a flood that statistically occurs every two years.
The Rhine will remain closed to shipping at the Maxau and Speyer gauges, as high water mark II has been exceeded. From Mannheim to Cologne, ships are only allowed to travel at a slower speed and in the middle of the Rhine due to the water level.
Despite the fact that water levels have been rising again since Wednesday, the state office only reports a low flood risk for the Moselle. In Trier, it is expected that the reported level of 6 meters, which has been slightly exceeded, will continue until Friday night. After that, the state office expects levels on the entire Moselle to fall until at least the beginning of next week. The water levels on the other rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate will also continue to fall.
The German Weather Service (DWD) expects only drizzle for Thursday, Friday and the weekend after days of heavy rain in Rhineland-Palatinate.
