Well-being or state of being free from illness or injury (It's your health!) - Higher rates of skin cancer therapy in health facilities noted.

Over the last two decades, the number of hospital visits for skin cancer has increased drastically. The Federal Statistical Office reports that over 109,000 individuals underwent treatment for skin cancer in German hospitals in 2022, signifying a surge of approximately75% from 2002.

The surge was most profound in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, which saw a two-fold increase, totaling 84,500 cases in 2022. Close to 25,000 patients received hospital treatment for melanoma (black skin cancer) in 2022, a 14% hike from 2002. The majority of basal cell carcinoma instances are believed to be caused by sun exposure. Conversely, melanoma is more challenging to treat.

The ratio of skin cancer treatments to all cancer treatments has also experienced a rise: in 2002, skin cancer comprised 4% of all cancer treatments, whereas in 2021, it represented 7%.

More than 4,400 individuals perished from skin cancer in 2022, representing a 65% escalation from 2002. While the overall number of cancer-related fatalities rose by just 10% during this period, skin cancer fatalities dominated. Remarkably, the overwhelming majority of those who lost their lives to skin cancer in 2022 were aged 80 or older.
