Communal commitment - Higher expense allowances possible for voluntary work
Volunteers in the municipalities can receive a higher reimbursement for expenses. The Interior Ministry is increasing the maximum rates by approximately 20 percent as of July 1. In particular, the over 10,000 volunteer members in communal representations, as well as the 114 volunteer mayors, could now receive more money, the ministry announced on Thursday. The many volunteers in the state fire departments also benefited from the increases. Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) sees the increase in contributions as a recognition and appreciation of volunteer activities.
Reimbursements are intended for expenses such as food, communication, office materials, or travel costs. Members of a district council, for example, receive, in addition to meeting fees, a flat rate of up to 284 Euro per month, and a leader of a local fire department receives 180 Euro.
