High water after rain and melting: shipping suspended

A lot of water is currently coming into the rivers in the southwest from the mountains and above. As a result, nothing is possible on the Rhine - and it is expected to continue to rain, sometimes heavily.

Weather conditions - High water after rain and melting: shipping suspended

Parts of Baden-Württemberg are flooded due to melting snow and rain. Shipping on the Rhine was suspended on Tuesday. The decisive water level of 7.50 meters was exceeded in the morning, according to the First Harbour Master of the Karlsruhe Rhine ports. The water level on the Rhine near Karlsruhe could rise even further in the coming days.

According to the Baden-Württemberg Flood Forecasting Center, the peak is expected on Thursday. On Tuesday morning, the flood water levels on the High Rhine near Hauenstein and on the Upper Rhine near Kehl were also exceeded. Further rises in water levels are also expected there.

However, due to the interplay of melting snow and further precipitation, the forecasts are currently changing constantly, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday. There are new forecast models every three hours.

According to the German Weather Service, it will continue to be quite wet. Widespread rain is expected on Tuesday, including heavy rain in the Black Forest. The remaining snow will also thaw there. There will be persistent rain in the Black Forest and the Upper Swabian Allgäu until Wednesday morning. In 30 hours, up to 40 liters per square meter can fall there. In the southern Black Forest, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall of up to 70 liters per square meter in 30 hours are to be expected.

From Wednesday night and during Wednesday morning, isolated small floods may form in the south of the country. The rivers in the Black Forest, on the Swabian Alb and in Upper Swabia will be affected. Lake Constance also currently has a high water level for the time of year by historical standards. However, this still looks undramatic: According to the spokeswoman, flooding has neither occurred nor been predicted there so far.
