High voter turnout seen again for EU elections in Saarland, as witnessed in 2019.

Around the middle of the day, as many individuals in Saarland had cast their votes for the European elections as they did in the previous 2019 poll. At 2:00 p.m., the voter participation rate had reached 37%. The count of absentee ballots hasn't been incorporated yet, according to the head of the state election board. In 2019, the voter turnout was slightly higher, at 37.2%, by that time of the day.

The exact participation rate for absentee ballots will only be revealed together with the election's final results. The state election director plans to publish the complete results for the European election on Sunday at 11:00 p.m. When the final polling stations across the EU close, these results will be made public.

Preliminary findings for the local elections are predicted to be released on Monday. On Sunday evening, however, results are expected for the direct elections of mayors, district mayors, and county commissioners.

Around 800,000 citizens of the Saarland were invited to choose representatives in the European Parliament and local councils on Sunday. Concurrently, there were approximately 23 direct election contests for mayors, district mayors, and county commissioners.

For the first time in the European election, young folks aged 16 and 17 years were allowed to vote. The age limit for electing local officials, meanwhile, remained at 18. Thirty-four political parties appeared on the ballot for the European election. Over 10,000 election workers were employed.

In the previous European election in 2019, the CDU secured 32.5% of the votes, while the SPD earned 23.1%. Voter turnout was around 66%. In 2019's local election, meanwhile, the CDU received 34.0% and the SPD obtained 30.0%.
