- High voltage line work: blockage on A4 near Aachen
After the summer holidays, a section of the A4 highway, crucial for Dutch vacationers, will be temporarily fully closed for two weeks. Starting August 21, the highway between the Aachen interchange and the Aachen-Zentrum exit will be closed daily between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM, as announced by the Federal Highway Authority in Cologne. On both Sundays, the closure will be in effect throughout the day. The reason for this is work on high-voltage lines. The route is expected to reopen at 5:00 AM on September 4.
Traffic heading towards Heerlen in the Netherlands will be rerouted from the Aachen interchange via the A44 through the city to the Aachen Zentrum exit. On the opposite side, traffic will be directed through Aachen via the Broichweiden exit of the A44 and back to the Aachen interchange. Even the only remaining drivable section of the A544 into the city center will not be usable.
The A4 is a heavily traveled east-west connection from and to Cologne, popular among vacationers heading to the Netherlands.
In an effort to mitigate the impact of the highway closure, alternative transportation options such as public buses and trains might be advised for vacationers on the A4 route. During this period, telecommunications companies may also need to adjust their network infrastructure to accommodate increased demand for data usage due to the diverted traffic.
