Education - High sickness rate among teachers: schools in emergency mode

In many schools in Brandenburg, the high sickness rate among the teaching staff has already led to the discontinuation of individual subjects. "The level of sick leave is exceptionally high," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education on Friday. A few days ago, this led to lessons being canceled at 44 schools in the state. This mainly affected subjects with a "mathematical and linguistic focus", said the spokesperson. The "Märkische Allgemeine" had initially reported this.

The so-called "reduced attendance operation", which was declared at the 44 schools, represents the highest level of a three-stage plan by the Ministry of Education. The plan was drawn up during the coronavirus pandemic. At this level, teaching is "concentrated on key areas" - in other words, only core subjects are taught. Around a year ago, only 19 schools - less than half - were in the third stage. The schools decide on the step in consultation with the education authority.

The high level of sickness is due to the nationwide wave of illness, said the ministry spokesperson. The three-stage plan was adapted to the infection situation after the pandemic and reactivated in November. According to the Ministry of Education, there are 938 schools in Brandenburg, 744 of which are publicly funded.
