Living in Saxony-Anhalt - High proportion of cooperative apartments

In Sachsen-Anhalt, there are significantly more apartments in the possession of cooperatives and municipal housing companies than in the rest of Germany. According to the Statistical Office, approximately 31 percent of the housing units in the state are maintained by housing industry companies. Nationwide, this proportion is 17.7 percent.

In total, there are around 1.2 million housing units in Sachsen-Anhalt, according to the 2022 census - excluding places in nursing homes. The majority of the housing units in the state are reportedly owned by private individuals. One in every two housing units is in private ownership. This corresponds roughly to the national average. The most cooperative housing units are in the state capital Magdeburg (23.5 percent), the fewest in the Saalekreis (5 percent).

In Saxony-Anhalt, many residents choose to live in apartments managed by municipal housing companies, contributing to the high proportion of cooperative and housing industry-owned apartments in the state. Furthermore, housing companies play a significant role in providing housing options in Saxony-Anhalt, accounting for nearly one-third of the total housing units.
