High investment backlog in Thuringian municipalities

Thuringia's municipalities continue to face an investment backlog of several hundred million euros per year. This is the conclusion of the Municipal Monitor, which was presented by the Thüringer Aufbaubank in Erfurt on Monday.

According to Matthias Wierlacher, CEO of the Aufbaubank, a survey of local authorities revealed that cities, municipalities and districts expect an annual investment requirement of around 1.3 billion euros over the next three years.

If annual investments in roads, schools, digitalization and increased renewable energies of half a billion euros are assumed, around 800 million euros are still outstanding due to a lack of funding. Wierlacher proposed an investment fund with low-interest loans to provide support.

According to the survey, the municipalities' investment requirements have risen continuously in recent years: in 2019, it was still around 1.0 billion euros, compared to 1.2 billion euros last year.

The investment backlog in Thuringian municipalities exceeds several hundred million euros annually, as revealed by the Municipal Monitor. To address this issue, Matthias Wierlacher, CEO of the Aufbaubank, suggests establishing an investment fund offering low-interest loans.
