Retail trade - Hesse's retailers complain about poor Christmas business
Only just over one in seven retailers in Hesse is satisfied with Christmas business so far. This was the result of a non-representative survey of members of the trade association, which was published on Tuesday. According to the survey, 65 percent of the 130 participating companies reported lower sales in the first two weeks of Advent than a year ago. Overall, fewer customers came to the city centers and stores. The general consumer mood is said to be gloomy. The association has forecast total sales of 10.7 billion euros for the Christmas season. This would be an increase of 1.5 percent, not adjusted for prices.

Despite the challenging economic situation, Frankfurt on the Main managed to have a relatively solid retail trade during the Christmas season, compared to other cities in Hesse. However, this success doesn't seem to have affected the overall dissatisfaction among retailers in Hesse, as shown in the trade association's survey. Consequently, despite the predicted increase in total sales for the Christmas season, retailers in Hesse are still lamenting the poor performance of their retail trade, particularly in the first two weeks of Advent.
