- Hessen broadens educational enrichment in educational institutions.
Hessen is amplifying the advocacy for respect, democratic education, and non-violence in its educational institutions. According to Culture Minister Armin Schwarz (CDU), based in Wiesbaden, it's essential for every student to communicate respectfully, uphold democratic values, and appreciate the essence of free speech.
"We should unequivocally uphold our non-negotiable values, embody them in our daily lives, big and small. It starts with saying 'please' and 'thank you' and extends to debating right and freedom," stated Schwarz.
The new academic year in Hessen commences on the following Monday. The Minister has declared that existing initiatives on these subjects will be further reinforced. New educational resources and teacher development programs will also be introduced.
The over 36,500 refugee and immigrant children and adolescents enrolled in intensive classes will now receive an additional two hours each week focusing on promoting local values and democratic education.
Given the rising polarization, misinformation, and worrisome trends on social media, the promotion of values, learning about democracy, and non-violence prevention hold considerable importance, as highlighted by the Minister. Right-wing prejudice, anti-Semitism, and extremism, like that originating from the Islamic sphere, need to be challenged in schools as well.
The Minister's emphasis on democratic education extends beyond just verbal communication, also incorporating the use of educational resources and teacher development programs. The promotion of democratic values and non-violence is particularly crucial in addressing prevalent issues like right-wing prejudice and extremism, making education a powerful tool in shaping a more respectful and inclusive society.
