Hesse appoints lawyer for MV climate protection foundation
After a long search, State Parliament President Birgit Hesse has appointed the lawyer Andreas Urban from the Hamburg law firm Heuking, Kühn, Lüer und Wojtek as the State Parliament's representative for the MV Climate and Environmental Protection Foundation. He is now to examine whether there are possibilities for implementing the state parliament's decision to dissolve the foundation. This was announced by Hesse on Wednesday after a meeting of the Council of Elders in Schwerin. The foundation is highly controversial because it was financed with Russian money and helped to complete the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline shortly before the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine. The dissolution of the foundation, which was decided by the state parliament on March 1, 2022, has so far failed due to legal hurdles and the refusal of the board of directors to resign.
During the discussion in Schwerin's Council of Elders, Hesse expressed concern about the foundation's connection to the energy crisis, as it received funding from Russia and aided in the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. This situation raises questions about Parliament's involvement in energy policy and its role in international conflicts, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine.
