Herta Müller reads texts against anti-Semitism

Nobel Prize for Literature winner Herta Müller and other personalities want to set an example against anti-Semitism with readings at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. Müller will be joined on stage next Friday (November 10) by author Thea Dorn, actor Ulrich Matthes and women's rights activist Seyran Ateş, among others, according to the DT. They will read texts by Hannah Arendt, Jean Améry and Gabriele Tergit. The evening, organized by the writers' association PEN Berlin and entitled "Never again is now", is free of charge.

"We want to show solidarity with the Jewish citizens living in Germany," said artistic director Iris Laufenberg according to the press release. "We must continue to visit Jewish cultural institutions, museums, restaurants and stores, we should do so now more than ever and thus set an example against fear, for solidarity and peaceful coexistence."

The Berliner Ensemble is hosting an additional event on Thursday (November 9) to mark the 85th anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht with publicist Michel Friedman. He will speak with Thomas Haldenwang, head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, and Felix Klein, the German government's anti-Semitism commissioner, on the subject of hatred of Jews, according to an announcement by the theater. On November 9, 1938 and afterwards, thugs in the Nazi state destroyed synagogues and Jewish businesses.

At the Deutsches Theater, Herta Müller and other renowned figures will read texts that confront anti-Semitic sentiments, drawing from authors such as Hannah Arendt and Gabriele Tergit. The theater, recognizing the importance of Jewish cultural institutions, also hosts an event on Thursday to commemorate the Reichspogromnacht and discuss the ongoing issue of hatred towards Judaism.
