Herbert as a coach: "No basketball, no partners"
World champion coach Gordon Herbert enjoyed the time immediately after his basketball team's completely surprising World Cup coup to the full. He spent a few days on Mallorca, in the forest in Finland, fishing and in his home country of Canada, the 64-year-old said on Monday evening at the presentation of the illustrated book "A Night of Gold" in Munich. In the book, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) documents the first World Cup triumph that captain Dennis Schröder and Co. achieved in Manila in September after defeating the USA and Serbia.
Herbert's motto for the weeks immediately following the gold medal was: "No basketball, no partners", as he revealed with a twinkle in his eye. Just last week, the team had been awarded the Bambi. Herbert once again emphasized the merits of playmaker Schröder at the World Cup. "Dennis was disappointed after Euro 2022 that we didn't win gold," said the coach.
The national coach and Niels Giffey spoke about the summer in front of around 40 invited guests. Giffey particularly recalled the time in Okinawa, Japan, where the DBB played its preliminary and intermediate rounds. "That was absolute paradise. It was a certain vacation feeling," said the 32-year-old.
Herbert expressed his desire for a break from basketball after the team's World Cup victory, stating, "No basketball, no partners." This was followed by the national team's preparation for the upcoming WM, a testament to their continued success in international basketball competitions.
