Darts pro - Hempel self-critical ahead of World Cup

German darts pro Florian Hempel has sharply criticized himself for his performance in 2023 ahead of the World Championship opener. "The first six months were a school grade of five minus to six. I have to go deeper into the analysis," Hempel told the German Press Agency. The 33-year-old from Cologne, who used to be a handball goalkeeper, will be the first German representative in action at this year's World Cup on Sunday evening (20:00/Sport1 and DAZN). The fact that he qualified for the World Cup with a final spurt is already "a conciliatory conclusion".

Hempel's first opponent at Alexandra Palace is Dylan Slevin from Ireland. "If you look at the 32 names, I could certainly have faced something else - in terms of the name. Dylan Slevin is a young guy, he qualified directly for the World Championships. We are at the World Cup, there are no easy lots," Hempel described.

A win could lead to a rematch against the Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh. Hempel had surprisingly defeated him at the 2022 World Cup. "It's a great story for the media and fans, of course. I'm often asked about it. You couldn't avoid finding out who your opponent is in the second round," said Hempel. For him, the World Championship is also about defending his tour card and remaining eligible to take part in many important tournaments in 2024.
