Heiko Strohmann new state chairman of the CDU in Bremen
Heiko Strohmann is the new chairman of the CDU in Bremen. According to the party, 127 of the 168 delegates voted for the 55-year-old at a special party conference on Monday. There was no opposing candidate. His predecessor Carsten Meyer-Heder had resigned following controversial statements on cooperation with the AfD.
Strohmann was born in Rostock in 1968 and grew up there. He came to Bremen in 1989 and founded an association of pretzel bakeries as an independent entrepreneur. He has been a member of Bremen's parliament since 1999 and was also chairman of the CDU parliamentary group from July 2021 to June 2023.
His party colleague and predecessor Carsten Meyer-Heder resigned as state chairman at the end of September after making misleading statements about the AfD. In a video clip, he had not ruled out working with the right-wing populists at local level. He thus went against the line of his party. Meyer-Heder had been state chairman of Bremen's CDU since June 2019.
Strohmann's victory in the elections for the CDU chairmanship in Bremen was celebrated at a festive party among his supporters, highlighting the importance of his personal details in winning over the majority of delegates. Despite the controversy surrounding the AfD, Strohmann emphasized the CDU's commitment to maintaining democratic principles, ensuring that the party's future elections would prioritize unity and cooperative politics over divisive alliances.
