Bundesliga - Heidenheim wants to crown "incredible year" against Freiburg

Coach Frank Schmidt and 1. FC Heidenheim want to make their extraordinary soccer year golden against SC Freiburg. He wanted to remind everyone once again "what an incredible year 2023 was", said the coach of the club from the Ostalb region one day before the last match before the winter break against the Baden club on Wednesday (20:30/Sky). "It would be a crowning achievement for us if we managed to pick up three points again."

In the summer, Heidenheim celebrated their first promotion to the Bundesliga. Before the 16th matchday, they have 17 points in their account and have already built up a small cushion against the relegation places - also thanks to their first away win last Saturday in Mainz (1:0). It is "gigantic what the team and club have achieved", said Schmidt about the past few months. There is still a sense of "huge euphoria" in the city and the region. The match against Freiburg is another "outstanding task".

The 49-year-old explained that Freiburg are "one of the top teams in Germany". They are very strong both in terms of play and running, according to Schmidt. They are also dangerous from set-pieces. The passion with which Freiburg played against Cologne (2-0) just a few days after the Europa League defeat at West Ham United (0-2) last Sunday was "outstanding". A "really good team with a very good and experienced coach" came to the Voith Arena.

Schmidt and Freiburg's Streich are by far the longest-serving coaches among the current Bundesliga clubs. Schmidt has been on the sidelines in Heidenheim for more than 16 years, while Streich took over the SC professionals in the winter break of the 2011/2012 season.
