Heidel: Siewert candidate in Mainz coach search
Interim coach Jan Siewert has the chance of a longer contract at FSV Mainz 05. "Jan is one of the candidates, we know him, we don't need to get to know him," said sporting director Christian Heidel on Saturday shortly before the match against RB Leipzig on pay-TV channel Sky. "We'll take our time to look at that." The 41-year-old actually coaches the Rheinhessen U23s and stepped in this week following the departure of Bo Svensson.
FSV went into the matchday bottom of the table and had been knocked out of the DFB Cup at second-division side Hertha BSC during the week. "We dealt with Jan quite openly, we didn't have any time to think about it," said Heidel. "He's done it before." Siewert had already taken over the Mainz team briefly in December 2020 before Svensson was signed.
"I can only take my hat off to Bo," said Heidel. "It was a joint decision." The Dane had "made it very clear that he no longer believes he is the right coach for the current situation." Svensson had also played for FSV as a professional for many years and is considered a crowd favorite. "I don't need that more often," said Heidel about the decision to change coach.
Jan Siewert, currently coaching the FSV Mainz 05 U23s, is a candidate for a longer contract at the Bundesliga club, as mentioned by sporting director Christian Heidel. If appointed, Siewert would take over from Bo Svensson, who previously coached FSV Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga and was a fan favorite at the club.
