Heavy snowfall is expected in southern Germany

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) issued a level three red warning (out of four) due to heavy snow in the southernmost part of the country, primarily in Bavaria.

"The period from 14:00 on Friday to 20:00 on Saturday will see snowfall ranging from 30 cm to 40 cm", the DWD statement said.

Meanwhile, orange and yellow warnings were issued for the rest of the country due to negative temperatures, icy conditions, and frost.

Friday started with a cold and frosty morning, with temperatures dropping to -6 in Berlin and -5 in Hamburg. Fresh snowfall occurred in some regions, including Baden-Württemberg.

The DWD warned of slippery surfaces on sidewalks and roads.

Dozens of accidents were reported overnight on Thursday. On Friday, the North Bavarian Police Department in Ingolstadt reported 48 operations and five minor injuries.

Continuous snowfall also disrupted traffic in eastern Bavaria. According to a police representative, around 30 accidents occurred in Lower Bavaria.

In some cases, roads were blocked due to snow or fallen branches. In the Dingolfing-Landau district, classes in two schools were canceled due to inclement weather.

In Berlin, the Charité hospital reported a significant increase in injuries due to weather conditions, especially bone fractures. This led bicycle clubs to demand an increase in the amount of gritting.

"We are receiving reports from our members that the condition of many bike paths in Berlin is dangerous: slush and ice turn cycling into a slippery activity," said a representative of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) Berlin. "Improvements are needed here. Bike paths should be cleared and made usable as quickly as traffic lanes."

Windy weather was observed in other parts of the country, including Thuringia, but according to authorities, there were no serious problems on the roads.

This occurred after strong snowfall and winter storms caused chaos earlier in the week.

On Monday and Tuesday, firefighters and rescuers were called to deal with the aftermath of several incidents in the Rhine-Main region.

Roads were closed, and public transportation was disrupted. Frankfurt Airport was also affected, with several flights canceled.

The DWD's warning for heavy snowfall from 14:00 on Friday to 20:00 on Saturday could potentially lead to several inches of snow accumulation, with 30 cm to 40 cm predicted in southern Germany, primarily in Bavaria. The German authorities reported numerous accidents due to adverse weather conditions, with the North Bavarian Police Department in Ingolstadt reporting 48 operations and five minor injuries on Friday.
