- Heavy rains cause flooding in Hesse
Heavy rain overnight has caused flooding in several regions of Hesse. The effects of the weather were already felt on Tuesday evening. As a police spokesperson reported, the carriageway of the A5 at the Gambacher Kreuz was temporarily flooded. Water was reportedly up to 40 centimeters deep on the road.
According to police reports, underpasses in Weiterstadt, Darmstadt, and Heppenheim were also flooded, and several basements were flooded.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had previously warned of heavy rain in Hesse. On Tuesday evening, the Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environmental Protection and Geology (HLNUG) recorded 43.9 millimeters of precipitation at the Ulrichstein-Selgenhof measuring station in central Hesse within 6 hours. The DWD expects local storms through heavy rain with up to 40 liters per square meter, which can fall in a short period of time, for Wednesday as well.
The local authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel, as advised by the police. Additionally, the police have been redirecting traffic to alternate routes due to numerous road closures caused by flooding.
