A series of intense downpours accompanied by thunderstorms are set to hit regions in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia beginning this Saturday afternoon. According to Marcel Schmid from the German Weather Service (DWD), these storms will mainly affect western Saxony, eastern Thuringia, and southeastern areas of Saxony-Anhalt. In some places, as much as 60 liters of rain may fall per square meter in a short period of time.

Due to the formation of thunderstorm tracks in these regions, it's possible that more rain may fall in those areas, increasing the risk of localized flooding. Schmid warned that small rivers and streams might overflow as a result, and the worst of the storms should pass by midnight.

Sunday is expected to see a slight improvement in the weather, but still requires caution. Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are forecasted for all of Saxony, eastern and southern parts of Thuringia, and southern Saxony-Anhalt. As strong thunderstorms can bring the potential for lightning strikes, uprooted trees, and hail, drivers should be prepared for aquaplaning, said the meteorologist.
