Heavy rain: 25 vehicles involved in crashes on A4, 11 injured

On the A4 several accidents occurred in quick succession one afternoon, involving around two dozen vehicles. The police attribute this to inappropriate speed during heavy rain.

On the A4 Dresden-Erfurt highway near Chemnitz, there were nine accidents involving 25 vehicles in quick succession during a storm. There are eleven injuries, including one seriously injured, a police spokesperson said late in the evening. The injured were taken to hospitals by rescue helicopters. Initially, the police reported two seriously injured. The estimated property damage is around 200,000 euros.

The accidents occurred in the afternoon in the area before the Berbersdorf junction, all heading towards Chemnitz. There was a brief storm at the time of the accidents, according to the police. The spokesperson said the drivers did not adjust their speed in heavy rain. There was also an accident in the direction of Dresden at the same time, but no injuries were reported. The road was briefly closed as a rescue helicopter landed there.

In the direction of Chemnitz, there were initially seven accidents involving 21 vehicles, the police spokesperson said. A traffic jam formed. There were two more accidents involving a total of four vehicles.

The highway was fully closed in the direction of Chemnitz from around 3:00 PM to 7:20 PM. Traffic was diverted at the Nossen motorway junction towards the A14.

Due to the numerous accidents, many injured individuals were transported to various hospitals for medical attention. The police spokesperson initially reported two severely injured individuals, but the number was later revised to include one seriously injured person.
