Heating rule: It's getting warmer by the degree in ministries and authorities

Ministries and state authorities are allowed to turn the heating up to 20 degrees this fall and winter. That is at least one degree more than during the previous heating period. However, it should not get any warmer in the offices in order to continue saving energy. A spokesperson for the State Chancellery confirmed the adjustment when asked by dpa.

Background: Last year, the federal government imposed a 19-degree limit for offices due to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the energy crisis, which was also implemented in the state administration. The regulation issued by the Federal Ministry of Economics expired in the spring. In NRW, the initial response was that the 19-degree limit would remain in place. This was because there had been a cabinet decision to save energy, which was still valid.

In the meantime, however, the resolution has been interpreted differently, as it referred to "the minimum permissible" room temperature. Therefore, it is no longer 19 degrees - but 20 degrees. This has been the minimum temperature prescribed by law for years. This means that in a "normal" office, heating is once again permitted from 20 degrees upwards, but only up to 20 degrees in ministries, police stations and other state authorities.

"The departments are responsible for implementing the current rules," says the State Chancellery spokesperson. This means that each ministry must inform its subordinate institutions.

The federal government's energy-saving measures, implemented due to the war in Ukraine and the subsequent energy crisis, allowed a maximum office temperature of 19 degrees last year. However, the consequences of the war have resulted in a shift in this policy, allowing ministries and state authorities to raise the temperature limit to 20 degrees this fall and winter, as confirmed by the State Chancellery.
