Ennepe-Ruhr district - Heating oil leaked from building cellar into public sewer
Fuel has leaked into the public sewer from a cellar contaminated with heating oil in Herdecke in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. The cellar was located in a building that was currently being renovated, the fire department reported on Tuesday. The room had been heavily contaminated with heating oil, which first ran into a sewer in the building and from there into the public sewer. "Some of the oil was bound with sawdust, but not enough." The old heating oil tank had apparently been dismantled in the previous days. The police have started an investigation.
Over the course of the day, the fire department received reports of the smell of gas and oil from various locations. Several sewer inlets were checked until the source was discovered. In addition to the fire department and police, the public order office and the lower water authority were also deployed.
