Blessed is he who is free and can go to the free swimming pool: Bayern is heading towards the hottest day of the year today - and it could be particularly warm in the north. "Franconia has good chances of reaching 35, 36 degrees today," said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Munich. On Monday, 35.2 degrees Celsius were measured in Neuburg an der Donau - the highest value so far this year in Bavaria. "The announced heatwave has truly arrived." For the rest of the week, the DWD expects some cooling. It could even be quite wet in many places over the weekend, reducing the risk of forest fires.

It's difficult to predict where the highest daily temperature in Bavaria will be measured on Tuesday, the expert explained. Highest values are often recorded in Lower Franconia. The predicted values are still far from the all-time high in Bavaria, which was 40.3 degrees in Kitzingen on the Main on July 5, 2015. Records usually occur in July, not in August, said the meteorologist.

On Tuesday, the DWD warned of strong heat stress. From the afternoon onwards, thunderstorms with heavy rain are possible, especially in the Alpine region, and there could also be localized hail. Franconia could also experience thunderstorms.

On Wednesday, temperatures are likely to reach a maximum of 32 degrees in Bavaria. "The weekend will probably see a decrease," said the meteorologist. The weather will then likely be very changeable.

On Tuesday, the risk of forest fires was high in many parts of Bavaria, with a very high risk in parts of Lower Franconia. Some regional governments ordered observation flights.

Despite the predicted cooling, forecasts suggest that highest temperatures on Tuesday might still be recorded in Lower Franconia's forests. The risk of forest fires remains a concern, especially in Lower Franconia, due to the high heat.
