Heat assistance for the homeless - Heat: Cities offer homeless people a wide range of help

Extreme Cold and Heat pose a significant health risk for homeless people - German metropolitan areas take measures for people without a fixed abode during summer months. In Dresden, Leipzig, and Chemnitz, there are numerous places and facilities where homeless people can find refuge from high temperatures, a safe sleeping place, food, and most importantly, water, as a query from the German Press Agency revealed. Numerous cafes and shops reportedly participate in the "Refill" initiative. Here, anyone can fill up free of charge from the water pipes and quench their thirst.

Homeless people in Dresden can register at the Social Welfare Office and receive a place in a Transitional Housing Facility. They can also stay there during the day and find shelter from the heat, as a spokesperson for the city stated. Similar offers are available from the Housing Emergency Aid. The Salvation Army's Engagement Cafe also welcomes homeless people during heatwaves. Additionally, there are opportunities to shower and do laundry, as well as resting and relaxation areas.

In the state capital, social workers from various organizations are on the move and provide homeless people with water. Public water fountains and hydrants are also available.

In Leipzig, those affected can retreat to the Day Centers Leipzig Oasis and Island and receive free beverages, as well as sunscreen. Teams from Street Social Work provide water to homeless people and refer them to shady, sun-protected resting places.

In Chemnitz, offers for homeless and houseless people are valid all year round. The spokesperson stated that help is also provided during heatwaves. In addition to a shady spot, there are also cool beverages available. Several public water fountains have been set up in the city.

  1. During summer's extreme heat, municipalities in Saxony, such as Chemnitz, provide refuge and resources for homeless individuals, offering cool beverages and shady resting places, as confirmed by a spokesperson.
  2. The German Press Agency reported that in Chemnitz, numerous cafes and shops participated in the "Refill" initiative, allowing homeless people to fill up water bottles for free, providing a vital relief from the harsh weather.
  3. Just like in Dresden and Leipzig, Chemnitz's Housing Emergency Aid also offers temporary shelters, providing relief from both the cold and the heat, ensuring the well-being of homeless individuals in all weather conditions.
  4. As the weather in Chemnitz can reach extreme highs, the city's municipalities are proactive in providing resources and ensuring the safety of homeless individuals, similar to their counterparts in Dresden and Leipzig.
